Should leaders in faith be held at a higher esteem than everyone else?

People who criticize religion, (religion is really a concept created by man), are quick to chastise and mock fallen church leaders. They say, "you are no different than me", and nothing could be truer. For no matter how high a position a man or woman holds, they are still human and susceptible to failings.
